“Chopin” May 2025 Issue

“Chopin” May 2025 Issue, released on April 17th, features a two-page interview with me on the occasion of the Lausanne performance of Noriko Baba’s opera Nopera AOI from February 27th to March 1st. Sayaka Funakoshi has written a wonderful article, so please take a look.

“Noh singer Ryoko Aoki performed the Swiss premiere of Noriko Baba’s opera “Nopera AOI,” which has been highly praised in Japan and France.”
Baba incorporates unexpected everyday objects alongside musical instruments to create the sounds she imagines, and this piece is also rich in the power to evoke invisible things, such as the sounds of the natural world and the presence of spirits. As the drama progresses, this effect becomes more pronounced, merging with the passion expressed by Aoki’s chanting… With Aoki’s clear-sighted desire to connect classical performing arts to the future at its core, the works, which combine cutting-edge talent and sensibility, lead the audience to a real experience of a fantasy world. What unfolds there is a realm full of surprises and fascination, to the point that the expression “a fusion of East and West” feels cliché. “Nopera AOI” was a performance that allowed us to experience this for ourselves. (Sayaka Funakoshi)

With composer, Noriko Baba.
