2014.5.21 (Wed.) 18:30-
Peter Eötvös will be invited as the jury of the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award 2014. In this occasion, we will organize his portrait concert of chamber music. These pieces in this program were selected by the composer himself.
In the first part, Peter Eötvös will talk about his music.
In the second part, all pieces will be performed for the first time in Japan. Regarding the composer’s relationship with Japan, he stayed in Japan from March to September in 1970, in the frame of the World Expo in Osaka. He was a member of the German artist group, led by Karlheinz Stockhausen. His stay in Japan for 6 months made him familiar with Japanese culture and life, which gave strong influence to his music. After the death of Yukio Mishima, he composed his first opera “Harakiri” in Germany in 1972 for the Tokk Ensemble (Maki Ishii’s ensemble). In December 2011 in Rome, a Noh performer, Ryoko Aoki performed “Harakiri” with ensemble Alter Ego. Her debut CD “Noh×Contemporary Music” will include this piece. At the chamber music concert on the 21st May, in addition to “Harakiri”, “Psy”, “Dervish Dance”, “Cadenza” and “Two poems to Polly” will have their Japan premieres, too.
