“ONGAKU NO TOMO” January 2025 Issue

In the January issue of “Ongaku no Tomo” (Friends of Music), on sale 18 December, the 25 and 27 October performances of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra are featured on the cover of the Overseas Report as this month’s highlights. Please read the excellent review by Mako Yasuda.

Ryoko Aoki appears at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s performance of Schoenberg’s 150th anniversary.
“Dressed in white, Aoki emerges from inside the orchestra with an air of serenity. Melisande, played without expression or voice, but only with movement and gaze, has a fleeting yet intense presence. The vivid contrast with the gorgeous, lustrous music seemed to amplify the expressive power of both. The movements in the story, such as the dropping of rings and the hanging of long hair, were represented abstractly, and the long staircase, normally used by the conductor and others to ascend and descend, was used like a stage set…. The stage prepared for Schoenberg had a “subtractive aesthetic”. By concentrating on the music and the movements of the performers, the invisible emerges inside the listener: on the stage where Schoenberg himself gave the Dutch premiere in 1912, “Pelléas et Melisande” was reborn once again, giving modern audiences a new perspective.” by Mako Yasuda
