Noh Singer, Ryoko Aoki Commission Series “Noh × Contemporary Music” Vol.8-2
From 2010, a Noh singer, Ryoko Aoki, has organised “Noh × Contemporary Music” to commission international composers to write new pieces for Noh voice. So far, 36 pieces have been premiered in this series. In this project, we will commission Bernd Franke, Máté Balogh, Shiqi Geng and will premiere their new works on 14 May 2021. In the concert, the composers will talk about composing a new piece for Noh voice online, and then they will be performed. The talk will give audiences a deeper understanding of this new world of contemporary music and Noh.

Artists Biography：

Ryoko Aoki（Noh voice）
Ryoko Aoki is the pioneer of and inspiration for a new artistic form combining utai – traditional Noh recitation – with contemporary music. More than 50 works have been written for her by world-renowned composers including Peter Eötvös and Toshio Hosokawa. Singing with orchestras and performing in operas, she has worked to expand the audience for Noh recitation. She has performed in an opera at the Teatro Real de Madrid as well as with orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Ensemble InterContemporain and the Munich Chamber Orchestra. She has participated in music festivals including the Bartok Festival, the Festival d’Automne in Paris, and the Tongyeong International Music Festival. She has also performed at major concert halls including the Concertgebouw, the Philharmonie de Paris and the Kölner Philharmonie. Ryoko earned her BA and MA from the Department of Music at Tokyo University of the Arts (majoring in the Kanze School of Noh theatre), before gaining a Ph.D. from SOAS, University of London. She was appointed a “Japan Cultural Envoy” in 2015 by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs and was appointed as a Minato City Tourism Ambassador in 2019.

Bernd Franke
Bernd Franke was born in 1959 in Weissenfels/Saale. Between 1975 and 1981 he studied composition at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Musikhochschule Leipzig. Since 1981 he has taught at the Institute of Musicology at Leipzig University and the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Musikhochschule Leipzig. Since 2003 he has been Professor for composition, music of the 20th and 21st century, music theory and analysis at the University of Leipzig. He was also the recipient of the Hanns Eisler Prize and Mendelssohn Scholarship in 1981. From 1981 to 1985 he was Meisterschüler at the Academy of Arts in East Berlin. He began regular correspondence with Stockhausen, Nono, Ligeti and Henze in the mid- 80s. In 1987 he was awarded the Composition prize at the 9th Boswil International Composition Seminar (Künstlerhaus Boswil Foundation, Switzerland) and the Kucyna International Composition Prize, Boston (USA). He received the Leonard Bernstein Fellowship from the Tangelwood Music Center, USA in 1989 and studied with Bernstein, Lukas Foss, Louis Krasner and Oliver Knussen, amongst others. His first meeting with Hans Werner Henze, who was to become his mentor in the early 90s, was 1989. In 1994 Henze invited Franke to sit on the jury at the Munich Biennale for New Music Theater. Since 2017 Franke has been a Member of the Austrian Society for New Music. Collaboration and Commissions received include those by and with Riccardo Chailly, Kurt Masur, Paul Hillier, Lukas Foss, Michael Sanderling, Joel Sachs, Gabriel Feltz, Andrey Boreyko, Fabian Panisello, Howard Arman, Stefan Blunier, Yukiko Sugawara-Lachenmann, Ueli Wiget, HR, Jürgen Ruck, Wu Wei, and renowned orchestras such as the Gewandhausorchester, the MDR Orchestra, BSO Berlin, Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta, Kings Singers, BR/Musica Viva, MDR, NDR, Calmus Ensemble, Amarcord and the National Chinese Orchestra, as well as festivals such as the Darmstaedter Ferienkurse.

Máté Balogh
Máté Balogh was born in 1990, in Győr, Hungary. He graduated of the Conservatory of Pécs, where he specialized in the theory of music and composition with István Győrffy, he finished his studies in composition at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest under Zoltán Jeney. In 2013, he spent a semester in Trieste, Italy, studied composition with Fabio Nieder. Then for one year he had been working under the mentorship of Péter Eötvös. He received his doctoral DLA degree at the Liszt Academy and is currently an associate professor in the Music Theory Department and in the International Kodály Institute. Till September 2018 he had been the Editor-in-Chef of the Universal Music Publishing Editio Musica Budapest, mainly working with György Kurtág’s works. His pieces have been performed all over Europe and in Turkey, China, Japan and the United States.

Shiqi Geng
Shiqi Geng was born in 1995. He started to play the piano when he was 8 years old, music theory and harmony with 11 years and composition for himself with 12 years. From 2013 to 2014 preparatory Studium, in 2014 he began studying composition at the University of Music Graz. He holds the Bachelor’s degree Composition from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in 2018, where he is currently pursuing master’s degree Composition under Prof. Gerd Kühr and Prof. Beat Furrer. He won some prizes from competitions of composition around the world, and his works are performed in several countries from Asia and Europe, as well as with Ensemble offspring (Australia), Bruckner Orchestra Linz (Austria), Schallfeldensemble (Austria), Jenaer Philharmonie (Germany), Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and in Lange Nacht der Bühne in Linz, Forum Alpbach (Tirol), Weimarer Frühjahrestage für zeitgenössische Musik. He received also a commission from the Musikverein Graz for a Konzert für Menschenrechte (concert for the human rights) in 2017. He was awarded the 1st prize in the Toru Takemitsu Competition (Japan) in 2019. He receives a special scholarship from the City of Graz in 2018, he also receives in 2019 the “Musikförderungspreis” from the City of Graz.
Musician：
Mari Adachi（Viola）
Mari Adachi is one of the leading violists in Japan. She has been active as a soloist, a chamber musician and joined the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra as the Guest Principal Violist from 2011/2012 season. She has released her first CD “Winterreise” in 2018 and her second album recorded Bach’s solo pieces is going to be released from T-TOC RECORDS this August. She is very passionate for doing her solo recitals with unique programs with different concepts including baroque to contemporary repertoires. She worked as the associate principal violist at the Tirol Symphony Orchestra in Innsbruck since 2013 for 2 years and she has been joining Estonian Festival Orchestra directed by Paavo Järvi since 2016.
